Thus far the discussion about
orientation and form has been
restricted to two-dimensional
shapes and changing
orientation within a frontal
plane. However, there has been
considerable interest lately in
whether or not three-
dimensional objects are
recognizable when first seen
from one perspective and later
from another. If a child first
sees an elephant only from the
side will he or she recognize it
later if it is seen only from the
front? After all, the retinal
image will be very different in
the two cases. There are two
opinions about this. According
to one, objects have intrinsic
axes of symmetry and also
identifiable parts that can be
detected from virtually any
direction, and thus the object
can be easily recognized. But
according to a second point of
view, the retinal image is
likely to be so different that
recognition will be severely
impaired. At this writing the
evidence favors the second
position.
